Gender-based and sexual violence is a form of violence perpetrated against a person because of their gender or sexuality. It takes the form of acts, behaviors or even speeches based on preconceived gender inequalities and norms, designed to exert power over the victim. It can occur in a variety of contexts: in the public space, the private sphere, at school, at work, etc. It causes severe physical, sexual and psychological suffering.

Girls and women are particularly affected by sexist and sexual violence, not least because of the place they are given in patriarchal societies and the ongoing violations of their rights.
