Ordinary sexism
Ordinary sexism is defined as all attitudes, comments and behaviors based on gender stereotypes, which are directed against a person or group of people because of their gender. Although apparently harmless, these acts have the effect, consciously or unconsciously, of delegitimizing, inferiorizing or marginalizing those targeted, generally women.
It manifests itself on a daily basis through sexist jokes, remarks about motherhood, negative stereotypes, incivilities, unsolicited compliments or criticism about physical appearance, or exclusionary practices. Ordinary sexism creates a hostile and humiliating environment, which can damage the physical and mental health of victims and provide a breeding ground for more serious forms of sexist and sexual violence.
