Indirect discrimination refers to a situation in which an apparently neutral provision, criterion or practice disproportionately disadvantages a person on the basis of a discriminatory criterion.

Legal definition:

"Indirect discrimination is any provision, criterion or practice which is neutral on the face of it, but which may, on any of the grounds mentioned in the first paragraph, place persons at a particular disadvantage compared with other persons, unless that provision, criterion or practice is objectively justified by a legitimate aim and the means of achieving that aim are necessary and appropriate."
