Bias
Biases are determinants that pre-orientate judgment and create prejudice. They can be cultural, sensory, cognitive, social or gender-related. Biases often operate unconsciously, influencing our perception of reality. There are many types of bias, such as :
- Legitimacy bias
- Authority bias
- Sensory biases
- Cognitive biases
- Social biases
- Cultural bias
- Gender bias
Biases can lead to unfair or irrational decisions, particularly in professional contexts such as recruitment or performance assessment. They can also reinforce existing inequalities and hinder diversity and inclusion.
Example: During the interview, the recruiter asks the female candidate more difficult questions than the male candidates, without realizing it. It's an unconscious tendency that influences the recruiter's behavior.
Difference from stereotyping and prejudice: biases are the underlying mechanisms that influence our thinking and judgment, potentially leading to the formation of stereotypes and prejudices. They are more fundamental and far-reaching in their influence on our perception of the world.
